“Davidson’s wildly intense murder mystery grabs the listener from the beginning and holds on to the very end… The many characters are well written and have complex back stories that enhance the tale. The Damage Done, Now in Paperback

When I decided to re-release my debut novel, THE DAMAGE DONE, I set October 6th as the release date. It didn’t seem unrealistic — I had the files, and my cover designer was doing great work. The eBook release happened as I’d planned, with a perfect launch on Apple Books and Kindle. With Kobo and Nook — released via Ingram — it’s been a bumpier ride. (Just today, October 29th, Ingram got back to be about an issue I’d raised on October 4th. No resolution to the issue, though. It’s a process!)

Getting the paperback out has been even more of a minefield. I opted to print it with Ingram, because gives independent bookstores easy access to it. Unfortunately, there’s been nothing easy about the process, even with the files and a great cover in hand. I’m thrilled to announce that, in spite of all the obstacles, THE DAMAGE DONE is back in print in paperback! It’s literally available everywhere, and it’s a thrill to see it back in the catalog at Houston’s Murder by the Book, Denver’s Tattered Cover, New York’s Kew & Willow, Austin’s BookPeople, Pasadena’s Vroman’s Bookstore, and Scottsdale’s Poisoned Pen. If you want to shop local, IndieBound can help. (And yes, the book’s on Amazon, too.)

If you pick up a copy and want a signed bookplate for it, just let me know! Email me at hilary@hilarydavidson.com and I’ll send that out. Stay tuned for an event to celebrate Lily Moore’s tenth anniversary, and her new lease on life.

Welcome Back, Lily Moore!

If you’ve been reading my fiction for a while, you know that my first three novels feature an intrepid travel writer named Lily Moore. My debut novel, THE DAMAGE DONE, won the 2011 Anthony Award for Best First Novel. That book, and the others featuring Lily, have been out of print for the past couple of years, but I’m delighted to say that I’m bringing them back in new editions — in paperback and eBook. THE DAMAGE DONE returns to the world today! Some of the praise it’s received since its first publication by Tor/Forge in 2010:

“Hilary Davidson’s lush novel delivers on all counts, offering both slow-burn suspense and creeping pathos. Taking the classic story of a hero’s quest to solve the riddle of a wayward sister, it’s ultimately a tale of lost women, victims and victimizers, damaging and perilously damaged. A rich, haunting debut.” — Megan Abbott, New York Times bestselling author

“One of the best debuts I’ve read in years.” — Crimespree Magazine

“Davidson smartly injects the proceedings with a healthy dose of noir. Just like many of her characters, Davidson isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. The result is a mystery that contains more grit than glamour. And while it still has a heart, it’s of the broken variety.” — Noir Journal

“Making a notable fiction debut, travel journalist Davidson has written an intriguing psychological mystery with a fully drawn protagonist who is surrounded by real characters who either care for her or who want her to fit their idea of who she should be.” — Library Journal

“THE DAMAGE DONE is truly an astonishing read. Think Hitchcock writing for the hip Manhattan set… Neil Young might have to rewrite the song. The novel is that startling and original.” — Ken Bruen, award-winning author of the Jack Taylor series

The eBook is available now via Apple, Amazon, Kobo, Nook, and everywhere else eBooks are sold. The trade paperback (ISBN 978-0989726313) will be out later this month via Ingram, which means it can be ordered by any bookstore or library. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Lily’s return! Stay tuned for a virtual event later this year.

DON’T LOOK DOWN Gets a Starred Review From Library Journal!

My latest book, DON’T LOOK DOWN, has had a wild ride. It was released as the pandemic hit North America and most of my book tour had to be cancelled. (In retrospect, I was extremely lucky in that I got to have a Toronto party at Ben McNally Books before the book came out, and then events in New York with Sarah Weinman and Alex Segura before the city was shut down.) The reviews have been wonderful but many have been delayed as we’re all adjusted to our new normal. It was a huge thrill to learn that Library Journal just gave the audiobook a starred review! Here’s a little bit of what they say:

“Davidson’s wildly intense murder mystery grabs the listener from the beginning and holds on to the very end… The many characters are well written and have complex back stories that enhance the tale. The age-old themes of survival, class, ambition, greed, revenge, love, and deceit all come into play.”

Better late than never! If you’d like to read the full review, it’s available to the public as part of this article. PS The “Wildly Exciting Police Procedural” mentioned in the title is my book!

A Rave from the Globe & Mail!

There is nothing like a rave from legendary reviewer Margaret Cannon to make my day! I was over the moon to see DON’T LOOK DOWN featured in Cannon’s latest column for The Globe & Mail, “Six New Mystery Novels to Cure the Isolation Blues.” Here’s a little bit of what she had to say about my latest novel:

Donʼt Look Down, the second novel in a series featuring NYPD police Sheryn Sterling and Rafael Mendoza, is a stunning trip through the Big Apple. Itʼs also a deftly plotted mystery that begins with blackmail and revenge… This is an excellent book with good characters and an fantastic plot, but what I loved were Davidsonʼs descriptions of New York.

If you’d like to read the full review — and the rest of the article — click here (it’s behind the Globe‘s paywall, so you need to be a subscriber). Thank you, Margaret Cannon!

More About That Virtual Noir at the Bar

Friday night was a great night. The first-ever Virtual Noir at the Bar was a huge hit, with some 400+ viewers joining us from all over the continent and beyond. Huge thanks to Alex Segura for organizing the event and to Kew & Willow Books for hosting it! If you missed out, you can still watch the entire show now on Crowdcast. (I’m on about an hour and a quarter in, reading from DON’T LOOK DOWN.) They say that necessity is the mother of invention — and our current state of quarantine was obviously the impetus for doing the event this way — but the fact that this format allowed so many people to take part is an argument for doing it again even after we can go outside.

A Virtual Noir at the Bar

There’s a new event on my calendar — and it’s a virtual one, so everyone can join in. This Friday, April 3rd, at 7pm Eastern Time, I’ll be participating in the first-ever virtual Noir at the Bar, hosted by Alex Segura and sponsored by Kew & Willow Books. The lineup includes Megan Abbott, Reed Farrel Coleman, Sarah Weinman, John Vercher, Wallace Stroby, and a host of terrific writers. It’s free to attend and all are welcome. Here’s the Crowdcast link to join us. Kew & Willow Books — a fantastic shop based in Queens, NY — will be selling the authors’ books during the event, and you’ll be able to chat with us during breaks between readings. Pour yourself a drink and join us for a wonderful night of crime fiction.
